You can live stream from multiple cameras with Canon’s new app, but not from the Canon itself

Canon has unveiled a new live-streaming app called Live Switcher Mobile, designed to wirelessly connect and switch between video feeds from up to three mobile devices. At present, the app is compatible exclusively with iPhones and iPads running iOS or iPadOS 16 or later. Surprisingly, Android devices are not supported, and, more notably, Canon’s own digital cameras cannot yet be connected to the app—a feature Canon promises will be added in the future, according to an FAQ.
The app is now available for download and can be used free of charge, but with several limitations. Free users are restricted to a maximum video output quality of 720p, and the stream includes a watermark. Additionally, the app’s interface occasionally displays ads, though these are not visible to viewers of the stream. Users can unlock enhanced features by subscribing for $17.99 per month, which upgrades the video output to 1080p, removes both the watermark and ads, and improves the overall experience. However, even with the subscription, the app doesn’t currently support resolutions higher than HD.
To use the app, one device is set up as the host, which provides the main switching interface and serves as the primary camera. Two additional devices can be linked to provide alternate camera angles or even a live screen capture, such as gameplay footage. Switching between video feeds can be done manually or automated, with the app cycling through feeds at intervals ranging from 8 to 20 seconds. Users can also display multiple videos on the screen using a picture-in-picture format. Customization options include text and image overlays, which can be used for branding, captions, or adding personal touches to the stream.
The app supports live streaming to platforms like YouTube, Facebook, and other RTMP-compatible services. However, its comment display feature is limited to YouTube and Facebook. While its capabilities aren’t as comprehensive as the free OBS Studio software, Live Switcher Mobile may appeal to newcomers to live streaming due to its simplicity and mobile-first design.
Though currently restricted to mobile devices, Canon has confirmed plans to integrate support for its digital cameras in the future. With additional functionality, such as potential 4K streaming support, the app’s relatively high subscription cost could become more justifiable, particularly for users seeking a portable and user-friendly streaming solution.
