WhatsApp’s latest iOS beta feature (v25.18.10.81) allows users to select between standard and HD quality for automatically downloaded images and videos. The capability, which is now accessible through Test Flight, will soon be made more widely available.

By allowing users to specify a default quality for automatically downloaded media, the new feature gives users more control over how much data and storage they consume. Standard and HD quality options are available to users for automatically downloaded images and movies. HD quality preserves crucial information regarding resolution, resulting in sharper images and videos but requiring more bandwidth and storage than standard quality, which compresses the media to conserve data and storage space.

WhatsApp introduced a dual upload system for HD media sharing, which serves as the foundation for the new quality control feature. When users upload media in high definition, this system uploads two versions of the same image or video: one in regular quality and one in high definition. In this manner, depending on user choices, any version can be immediately downloaded to the recipient’s app.

Users that get a lot of media, such as from group chats or talks that have been preserved, will find the new functionality very helpful. You can still use the HD version even if you only want the normal version to be automatically downloaded. If there is still an HD version available, WhatsApp can retrieve it from its servers when you touch to see the media. With the new auto-download quality setting, users can now choose which version of their app—HD or standard—should be downloaded by default.
