Updates to OpenAI for Whatsapp, include support for uploading images and sending voice messages

With all eyes on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s visit to India, the AI research company has introduced new ways for users to access and engage with ChatGPT through WhatsApp. On Tuesday, OpenAI announced a fresh set of updates, including a much-anticipated feature that enables users to send voice messages to ChatGPT via WhatsApp and receive text-based responses from the AI assistant.
This enhancement builds upon OpenAI’s earlier move in December when it first allowed users to chat with ChatGPT on WhatsApp by sending a message to ‘1-800-CHATGPT.’ At that time, this service provided an alternative means to interact with the AI chatbot, complementing existing options such as accessing ChatGPT via a web browser or using the dedicated mobile app.
With the latest rollout, OpenAI has significantly expanded the capabilities of 1-800-CHATGPT, making it easier and more interactive for WhatsApp users to engage with artificial intelligence. Now, users can not only send text queries but also upload images just as they would within the ChatGPT app. Moreover, with the introduction of voice message support, users can verbally ask questions or give commands, and ChatGPT will reply in text format.
These upgrades have been introduced across the board, including in India, where WhatsApp boasts one of its largest user bases. OpenAI has emphasized that these updates are designed to promote accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring that more people, especially in countries like India, can seamlessly interact with ChatGPT in a way that suits their needs and daily routines.
Beyond these enhancements, OpenAI is also introducing another key feature on Wednesday—allowing users to link their ChatGPT accounts across various subscription tiers, including Free, Plus, or Pro, directly within WhatsApp. This integration will make it easier for users to access ChatGPT with their existing account benefits while using WhatsApp as their primary interface. The account-linking feature is being rolled out globally, making ChatGPT more accessible and convenient across different regions.
With these latest improvements, OpenAI continues to strengthen ChatGPT’s usability on one of the world’s most popular messaging platforms, making AI-powered interactions smoother and more intuitive than ever before.
