In today’s program, we will talk with Mr. Arash Avin, a prominent Iranian singer, about fusion music and examine the role of fusion music in Iran.

Fusion music is a style of music in which components of two or more styles are combined.

fusion

One of the meanings of the word “fusion” is fusion. The first use of the term in music seems to date back to about fifty years ago, when some musicians in jazz combined improvisation and jazz harmony with elements of different styles such as rock, funk, rhythm and blues, and so on. This new style was called “jazz fusion” or “fusion”. In jazz music, instruments such as piano and double bass are not usually used, and instead electric instruments have a very strong presence. Makeup in this style is very close to rock music.

Jazz music; Jazz rock

The term jazz, sometimes used interchangeably with jazz fusion, dates back to the 1970s when rock bands used jazz elements in their music. Until the late 1960s, rock and jazz were two separate genres. Rock was the most popular style of music in America at the time, and jazz in that classical style was no longer popular.

Larry Coryell, or Fusion’s godfather, was someone who grew up with rock and roll music. He founded The Free Spirit, the first jazz band. In some definitions, jazz is considered to be the most intense, savage, and most electrified type of jazz fusion. Some musicians also say that jazz was an attempt in the late 1960s to combine the inherent characteristics of rock with the improvised rages of jazz. Rock music often emphasized simplicity and frankness rather than skill in playing. For this reason, jazz could be considered a more artistic form of rock. The pioneers of fusion placed great emphasis on components such as excitement, electricity, energy, and volume.

Music journalist Stuart Nicholson believes that jazz is equal to free jazz and was on the verge of creating a new musical language in the 1960s. According to him, the albums of Emergency by Tonny Williams and Agharta by Miles Davis could have established themselves as an independent and different genre from previous works, but the music market prevented this from spreading and caused this style. It is one of the most influential forms of jazz, which was finally broadcast on the radio in the late 1970s.

American fusion music was combined with progressive and psychedelic music in Britain in the 1970s, and bands such as Brand X, Bruford, Nucleus, and Soft Machine were among the most widely used.

Fusion music

Shortly after the introduction of jazz fusion, the word fusion gradually referred to any combination or combination of components of a music style with other styles, and today any music that features two or more styles is called fusion music. In addition to being a style, fusion can be considered a tradition and approach in music.

Fusion music in Iran

In Iran, there is no consensus among musicians on what fusion music is, and even some musicians do not believe in the existence of a style called fusion music. However, with the features we have listed for fusion music, many bands, musicians, and composers today can be classified as fusion music, not all of which can be named in one entry. Apparently, the first group to become known as a fusion group among some music publications and media and fans was the Dang Show Band. After that, Pallet and later many other groups worked in this style of music, among which (in the order of the year of establishment) we can mention groups such as Darkoob, Bomrani, Chartar, Dal, Damahi, and.. Among the musicians and composers in the style of fusion music, we can name people like Sohrab Pournazeri, Ali Ghamsari, Davood Azad, Mohsen Namjoo and..

In many cases, these groups and individuals use foreign music and instruments in their works along with Iranian music and instruments. Of course, each of these works has many differences and attracts the attention of specific audiences. Some have a wider audience and are closer to pop music. Some, even though they do not have well-known composers, are considered by festivals, awards and musicians internationally.
